Potty Training Gear

It’s been almost three years since I potty trained Adelaide, and in that time I’ve seen and/or used a lot of little kid potty equipment. Here’s what stood the test of time (and practicality, and cost…) in our home:

 

Potty Chair

There are MILLIONS of all-in-one potty chairs out there! I bought this one on the left by Safety 1st three years ago, because it had multiple functions—it’s a full potty seat, or the base can be detached, turned upside down and used as a step stool. Any product that has multiple functions, and can grow with your child, is going to get some mileage!

They don’t make this exact model anymore, but their current model looks just as useful. ⬆︎

 

Potty Seat

You don’t want to rely on a potty chair forever, so these seats that fit on top of your standard toilet will be useful for years to come. We have two models in our house.

I bought the Elmo seat three years ago, and it’s a pretty standard design that you can find with just about any character/color combination that would appeal to your child. It’s soft, lightweight, portable and easy for kids to use on their own. The downside of this seat is you have to have somewhere to store it when an adult wants to use the toilet.

A year ago, when we moved into a two story house and suddenly had a bathroom on the first floor that was used by everyone in the house, I found myself taking Adelaide’s Elmo potty seat up and down the stairs several times a day, which was NOT ok. I didn’t want to buy a second potty seat in the same style because then I’d have to buy a hook that attached to a wall in the bathroom and deal with that eyesore in the most used bathroom in our house. I did some research and discovered this little problem solver—the flip and flush potty seat. BRILLIANT! They have two different models—one that fits standard toilets and one that fits elongated toilets.

We’ve been using it for a year now and LOVE it. It flips up and stays up so adults can use the toilet. Then when the girls need to go, they can easily flip it down and not worry about falling in. It cleans easily, looks respectable and is the perfect balance of lightweight and durable. I highly recommend it!

 

Step Stools

If you have a toddler in the house, then you also have a step stool or two. We have three in our house—this IKEA one is the perfect height for the downstairs potty, this Munchkin one is in the upstairs bathroom for the potty and sink, and I love that it folds up for easy storage. But this one by KidKraft is AMAZING for sink access! It’s too high to use at a toilet, but it’s the perfect height to get your little one washing their hands all on their own.

The reviews are correct though, there is no tacky grip on the bottom, which caused it to slide on our tile floor. The simple fix we used was a bead of clear caulk on the stool’s feet. Voila, no more slipping!

 

Flushable Wipes

We have a package of moist, flushable wipes in every bathroom in our house. They are SO helpful to get kids cleaned up and on their way quickly and efficiently.

We’ve used the Cottonelle brand as well as the Costco Kirkland brand and haven’t found a considerable difference, other than price 😉 It seems like an indulgence, but just try them. You’ll never go back to wiping a poopy bottom with dry toilet paper ever again!
