At 8:30am on Tuesday, January 17, Adelaide took off her last diaper ever!
I’ve been dreading, and avoiding potty training because I was terrified of all of the effort it would require, but it turned out to be very little work on my part!
Adelaide was incredible. She used the potty right away! I explained what we were doing (no more diapers, big girl potty, sticker chart, books and prizes, weeeee!) and not 20 minutes later, while we were playing, she popped her head up and said “POTTY MAMA!” and ran to the bathroom! BLEW MY MIND!!!!! hahaha! The rest of the day continued like that! She pooped, she peed….it was awesome.
Nap time was great. She’s still sleeping in her crib, which means she can’t get up if she needs to pee, but she did fabulous anyway! Totally dry nap time!
After nap time, I let her wear big girl underwear! Since she was so perfect when she was naked, I wanted to take the next step and let her wear underwear (which can sometimes be confusing and feel like a diaper). She did have one accident that afternoon, but it was so minor that I hated not being able to give her a sticker. LOL!
She did so great on day one—13 successful trips to the potty which earned her 3 books!!
Day two was also very successful. She wore big girl underwear almost all day (and loved it) and only had one accident! She earned two more books on day two!
On day three, we moved from her little portable potty to the “elmo potty” that sits on the big potty. She did great! No hiccups. She had two accidents—one during her nap, and one that afternoon while she was with Joy. But she spent the whole afternoon out with Joy, had four successful trips to the potty and only one accident! I was so proud of her! At the end of day three she filled up her entire sticker chart and got her big finale prize, Clifford’s Great Big Movie. She was sooooo excited!
Day four, today, we went to the indoor park, and she was fabulous. When she had to go, she said, “POTTY MAMA” and we left the park, went to use the potty, and came back to the park. No accidents, no protests, no problems!
I don’t know why I waited so long to potty train her…or maybe it’s because I waited so long that it’s going so well…who knows! All I know is that I haven’t changed a poopy (toddler) diaper since Monday! Wooo hoo!
While she still has an occasional accident, and she’s still wearing pull-ups at night, I definitely consider her potty trained. I am so so so sooooo excited to have a potty trained toddler!!!

She’s so brilliant! I think you chose exactly the right moment to potty train her. 🙂 Can’t wait to see you guys again. xoxo
