We started making our own granola three years ago, after seeing all the crazy preservatives they put in the store-bought kind. Making granola is SO SIMPLE, and personally, I think the homemade granola tastes better than any store-bought granola I’ve tried.
After getting several requests recently for my recipe, I decided it was time to share it with the world!
To show you how easy it is to make homemade granola, I had my girls make the batch I photographed for this post. See, even kids can make granola! Full recipe PDF download at the end of this post.
Step 1: Gather your ingredients
There are so many variations on granola, that’s what makes it so amazing! You can customize it to your family’s tastes, dietary needs, or just make it with what you have on hand. Here’s what goes into our favorite granola recipe:
- Steel Cut Oats
- Rolled Oats (regular or quick cook)
- Sliced Almonds
- Chopped Pecans
- Shredded Coconut (unsweetened if you can find it!)
- Honey
- Butter
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla
I always buy almonds pre-sliced, because it’s just ridiculous to slice a bunch of almonds. But I don’t mind chopping up pecans myself! So chop some nuts if you need to!
I hope I don’t have to say this, but Adelaide did not chop the pecans…I made sure to handle all sharp and hot objects in the making of this granola 🙂
Step 2: Dry Ingredients
Measure out and mix all of the dry ingredients together in a LARGE bowl.
Step 3: Wet Ingredients
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add honey and vanilla and mix until combined. Then pour your warm vanilla honey butter (see how delicious it sounds already!?) over your dry ingredients and mix until everything is coated. It may not seem like there’s enough liquid ingredients to coat all of your dry ingredients, but just keep mixing!
Step 4: Bake it!
Spread the wet granola mixture onto a large baking sheet, lined with parchment paper or a silpat mat. Get the granola as even and thin as you can.
Then put it in a preheated 250° oven for 60-75 minutes, or until it’s nicely browned. The granola will harden and get crunchy as it cools.
Step 5: Dig in!
After you wait impatiently for the granola to cook and cool….
Cut your granola into bars or crumble it on top of yogurt or ice cream and top it with your favorite berries. Mmmm! Adelaide loves blueberries and strawberries, while Cadence prefers only strawberries.
Are you hungry yet?? Well, you’re in luck, here’s the recipe for INCREDIBLE AMAZING DELICIOUS GRANOLA in all its glorious detail. Save it to your computer, print it out, memorize it, whatever your preference, just make some granola for yourself! You’ll love it, I promise!
I'd love to hear what you think!
