Today’s the day! The big reveal! I’m thrilled with how my office turned out, and I’d love to hear what you think!
To catch you up, here is my inspiration board, a detailed look at the kids corner and how to make your own fabric covered cork board circles.
Before…
An average sized room, with beige walls, an IKEA desk, a leftover kitchen chair and a butchers rack.
If you remember from my inspiration board post, the challenges in this room were:
- This room has two functions—office and guest room. It’s primary use will be as an office, but we frequently (6+times/year) have overnight guests, and I DON’T want them to feel like they’re sleeping in an office.
- Second, this is a rental property with strict restrictions around painting and holes in the walls, which doesn’t leave me a lot of freedom when it comes to decor.
- The last big requirement for my office overhaul, is that it has to have a space for my girls. I have limited working hours each day, and if Cadence decides she’s only napping for one hour instead of two, I need to have a child-safe area in my office where she can play, while I finish my computer-based projects.
Here’s how it turned out!
After…
There are so many things I love about this room. It’s bright and happy, which will be SO WONDERFUL during the long winter.
The overhead light, while lovely to look at, was seriously under lighting the room. These little table lamps from Wayfair were the perfect solution for my space. They provide crucial light to the most used areas in the room, and create the most wonderful, warm, overall glow. I’m always so tempted to leave these two little lights on all day, because of how inviting they make my office.
When the room converts to a guest room, the little lamp that sits on my desk moves to the butchers rack to act as a bedside table lamp.
The conversion to a guest room is really easy. The desk legs twist off, and the desk top and legs store easily in the walk-in closet. Then it’s just a matter of unplugging and storing the computers, moving the kids’ toys downstairs to the play room, and moving the kids’ desk to the opposite wall, under the window.
The chair in the corner is needed at the kitchen table when we have guests. So it moves downstairs, and the office chair takes its place in the corner.
Can we talk about this clock for a minute!? I have always, ALWAYS wanted to own a starburst clock. They are a signature design from the mid-century modern movement and I’ve never been able to find one that was A) in my price range, B) functional and C) the right aesthetic. This clock from Wayfair checks all three of those boxes. I love that it coordinates with all of the chrome and white elements in the room, while reiterating the mid-century modern style. It is the perfect finishing touch to this little sitting area.
So there you have it! My office has been overhauled and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Now excuse me, while I reclaim my desk…Matt seems to have a newfound enthusiasm for working from home 😉
Thanks for following our Autumn Refresh series! You should head over to Joy’s blog to see her GORGEOUS master bedroom! It looks like a boutique hotel, and I’m so envious. She has lots of beautiful inspiration for bedrooms needing a little facelift before the holidays! Head on over and check it out!

I love this and I love how you make it a dedicated space for your guests! Two questions; where do the mattresses come from and where do they go when the guests aren’t around?
Heather says
Great question Ali! The bed is a double-high air mattress (Intex Supreme Air-Flow: http://tinyurl.com/qdexbga). When it’s not in use, it rolls up and is stored in the walk-in closet, in an 18 gallon Rubbermaid tote. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Thanks for sharing the information. I too was wondering about the appearance of the mattress. Love the amount of color which is added to the room.

I love your white office chair! I’ve been looking for something sturdy, but visually simple and without arms. Where is it from?
Heather says
Hi Jillian! I found the office chair on Overstock.com, and it looks like it’s still there: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Petal-Contemporary-Office-Chair/9321353/product.html?refccid=OQYUI7EOTVLJ6H2GYJKFGMWVOA&searchidx=39 🙂

So that’s where the magic happens. It’s all coming into focus now Heather. My office always looks like a bomb went off. I could use your organizational skills in this department as well.
Heather says
haha! Yes, Jay, this is where the magic happens 😀

Perfection!! What a happy and or-ga-nized room. I want that.

Thank you Lindsey! It’s the only room in the house where I have total control over how clean or messy it is. A kind of sanctuary for this type-A mama 😉
