Yesterday was Adelaide’s birthday party! This year, she had an Olivia (the pig) themed party. Olivia is the main character from a children’s book series (turned tv series) by Ian Falconer. We’ve had these books in our collection for about a year now and adore them, so it was a natural choice for her birthday party theme.
I had an absolute blast putting this party together!! It has taken up the better part of my life these past few weeks (sorry about the fewer than usual blog posts) but it was TOTALLY worth it!
We held the party at a local cupcake shop, in their designated party space. It was cute and modern and super perfect for our group of guests.
The Olivia books (or most of them anyway) are illustrated in charcoal and red gouache, so our party was entirely done in red, black and white.
The guest of honor wore a beautiful Olivia dress (made by Grandma Bauer) and specially made piggy ears (made by Grandma Lively). The whole ensemble was such a huge success! Adelaide LOOOOOOOVES her Olivia ears and dress! She asked to wear them both again first thing this morning, haha!
The main activity during the party was cupcake decorating. Adelaide sat on daddy’s lap and decorated her “yellow” cupcake with white icing and sprinkles! Since there were only a handful of cupcakes for decorating, the other guests paired up and cultivated their own delicious creations.
In addition to the cupcakes for decorating, each guest was asked to RSVP with their choice of cupcake flavor (a list was included on the invite) so we had a stack of specialty cupcakes, labeled with everyone’s name, to enjoy after the birthday girl blew out her candles.
When the guests weren’t decorating or eating I had a box of photo props (dress up type stuff) for them to enjoy. Everything in the box was red! There were feather boas, a red fedora, red glasses, piggy ears, and pig noses! I knew Adelaide would have fun with the props, but I totally underestimated how much fun the rest of the guests would have! It was not difficult at all to get our friends to pose for a picture with a pig nose! So much fun!!
I crafted/created/handmade a lot of the decorations. Here is a quick look at what I put together:
Invitations
Birthday Banner
Cupcake Labels
Water Bottle Labels
Olivia cut-out
Pig noses
Photo Props and Box
Party-Favor Bags
Table Signs
Coordinating balloons, tablecloths, napkins, plates, cups and straws
These decorations were only a mere backdrop—the real party was with our amazing friends who came out to celebrate our little girl! Thank you to everyone who came! You made Adelaide feel so special and so loved! We love that you are apart of her life!
Joy says
You did such a beautiful job on this party, Heather! Addie was at her absolute cutest. I’m totally in love with the photos of her in the glasses — she was hamming it up, hipster style! xo
