Today was Adelaide’s first day of Kindergarten!!
Drop off this morning went great—Adelaide was a rock star. We got to the kindergarten entrance, and that’s where the parents have to say their goodbyes—no parents allowed inside! (This was heartbreaking for me, but I understand…at least I keep saying that I understand. Really, I want to hold her hand and walk her into her classroom and put away her backpack and get her seated and say hi to her teacher and then kiss her goodbye…*sigh* we’re not in preschool anymore…)
Anyway, Adelaide gave Daddy a big hug and then gave Mommy a big hug, and then gave Cadence a big hug! That’s when Cadence started crying and saying “I’m going to miss you Adelaide!”. So Adelaide, being the good big sister that she is, sang “Big sisters come back!” just like Daniel Tiger sings.
Then she walked in to the school and into her classroom. That was it.
And that’s when I lost it 🙁 My baby just walked into kindergarten, without any help, when did she get so big, so independent, so confident and self-assured!? I was so happy, and so proud, and so in awe of that little girl and everything she can do now. It’s a crazy ride, motherhood.
They did a “soft-start” today, so 10 minutes after she went into class, the whole class came out and took a class picture together. The kids got to wave to mom and dad and blow kisses and smile for a picture and then officially start their day.
Pick-up went just as well as drop-off! Our conversation went something like this…
me: “HI SWEETIE!!! How was your day!?”
Adelaide: “Good! I lost my water bottle.”
That’s right, day one, she lost her water bottle. She left it on the playground after lunch. So, we went to look for it and LUCKILY we found it. Hooray! But ya, I had to laugh. We didn’t even make it through the first day without losing something. LOL!
Then I grilled Adelaide about her day…
The class read “The Kissing Hand” and did a BUNCH of activities around that book. It’s a very sweet book, (we have it in our collection) and it was fun to see how the story can be expanded into content for first time kindergartners.
Beyond the arts and crafts, all Adelaide talked about was recess and lunch, LOL!!! Oh, and she made a few friends and is already asking for playdates with them.
I think we’re off to a good start! Here’s to many more days like today!
PS. I melted completely off my chair when I imported this mornings “first day” photos from my camera and saw this beauty…
I am so blessed! Love my girls!
I'd love to hear what you think!
