Adelaide’s first week in kindergarten is going great! Since she’s going to school five days-a-week, the girls and I now have a critical morning routine we need to adhere to, so we get out the door on time. To help make our mornings run smoothly, I created “Ready Charts” so the girls know exactly what they need to do to get themselves ready in the morning. So far, they’ve been a big help!

After I made those clipboards, I knew I wanted gold star magnets to complete the look. Who doesn’t love a GOLD STAR when they’ve completed a task!? Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything close to what I had in mind, so I decided to make my own.
Making these magnets was so easy! Here’s how I did it…
Supplies
- A mold in the shape you want – I used this candy mold from Wilton
- Plaster of Paris
- Magnets
- Tools – a bowl to mix in, a whisk to mix with, a putty knife or spatula to scrape off excess plaster, an X-acto blade to clean up the edges
- Paint – I used spray paint, white primer and gold.
Step 1
Mix up your Plaster of Paris – two parts plaster to one part water. Make sure to only mix up what you need, for me it was a half-cup of plaster and a quarter cup of water. I added another splash of water because I really wanted a smooth finish on my magnets. They took a little longer to dry, but I loved how they turned out!
Pour the plaster mixture into the mold and tap the mold on the counter several times to remove any air bubbles. Then use a putty knife or spatula to scrape across the top of the mold and remove any excess plaster.
Let the plaster set up for about 15-20 minutes. Then carefully place a magnet into the center of each star. A wooden skewer can help position the magnets. DON’T USE ANYTHING METAL! 😉
Step 2
When the plaster is completely dry, turn the mold over and gently remove the shapes from the mold. There will be a little extra plaster around the edges of the shape. You can use your fingers or an X-acto blade to remove the excess and make a nice clean shape.
Then use a damp towel to wipe down the shapes.
Step 3
Now it’s time to paint! I used a coat of primer before applying the gold spray paint. Wait for your magnets to dry completely.
That’s it! You’re done! Cute magnets in any shape you want!
