We’ve had a few days in a row of GORGEOUS summer-like weather. We’re talking SUNNY and 75+ degrees. IN MARCH! I’m really starting to enjoy this California life. 🙂
Yesterday the girls and I went outside to do another baking soda and vinegar activity:
Baking Soda Paint
1 box of baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 cup of water (or thereabouts, add a little at a time until you reach the desired consistency)
food coloring
spray bottle of vinegar
Mix up your paint, divide it among as many containers/colors as you like, then have the kids “paint” the sidewalk/patio/deck/ground. When they’re done(ish) painting, hand them the spray bottle of vinegar and have them spray their artwork. Watch in wonder as it foams and bubbles. Woah! Cool!
Cadence was too young to care about the vinegar part, but she loved the gooey, gritty texture of the paint. And yes, she even tried to eat some. That only happened once 😉 Adelaide LOOOOOVED the squirt bottle of vinegar and the resulting chemical reaction. We will definitely be repeating this activity!
Here are some pictures of their summer-fun IN MARCH!

I tried this today and it kept separating after less than a minute of sitting with all of the solids sinking to the bottom. We ended up just scooping it out with our hands and schmearing it on the driveway. And then it barely fizzed when we sprayed it. Looked like loads of fun in your pictures. Not sure what went wrong for us. By a “box” of baking soda do you mean a 1 pound box?

Hi Audrey! Such a bummer that this activity was a dud for you 🙁 Yes, by a “box” I meant a 1lb box of baking soda. Perhaps there was too much water in your mixture? I noticed our paint start to separate as well, but it wasn’t until the activity was almost over. Maybe my kids were super aggressive with it and kept stirring the paint every time they dipped their brush. Not sure… Sorry I can’t be of more help!
